Ss. Peter & Paul, South Toledo, 1917

Some photos from a 1917 "Souvenir of the Consecration and Golden Jubilee of Ss. Peter & Paul Church" program and booklet.  Currently home to mostly Hispanic parishioners, the parish began in 1866 as the second German congregation in Toledo (St. Mary's being the first).  The current church was consecrated in 1917.

Interior of the church on the day of the Golden Jubilee.

See the list below for names of the parish "pioneers."

The program has many more photos of priests, sisters, choirs, etc.

St. John's Wort (with Blessed John Paul)

The yellow flowers of the herb St. John's Wort show up in the garden around the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, June 24, hence the name.  The sculpture of Pope John Paul II is a copy of a work by artist Timothy Schmalz -- his website is HERE.

Catholic Reading Circles, 1903 - 1904

A movement of Catholic reading circles and summer schools grew in the late 1800s and early 1900s, similar to the Chautauqua movement. The Champlain Educator / Mosher's Magazine served as a national publication, and groups in Findlay and Sandusky were listed in its directory:

Photos Welcome

If you have photos you'd like to share of any churches in the Diocese, feel free to email me -- see contact information on the right.  Photos from the western and southern ends of the diocese would be especially welcome, as I don't travel often in those areas.  Thanks!
